The Colebrookdale Railroad
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Pennsylvania's Americana Region is the historic Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, Pennsylvania.
As the demand for iron exploded during the American Revolution, the Schuylkill Valley became a hub for industrial production. As such, the Colebrookdale Railroad was opened in 1869 to provide freight and passenger services to the iron-producing communities along the Manatawny Creek, dubbed the Secret Valley by the Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust.
For nearly 100 years, train cars rode up and down the region, serving towns as far north as Bechtelsville and Barto. The ironworks industry in Berks County declined in the mid-20th century, and the railroad was eventually phased out and sat untouched for decades.
In 2009, Berks County officials purchased the abandoned railroad to preserve its historical significance. Although no longer used for moving iron, the Colebrookdale Railroad has become a popular spot to relive the glory days of Pennsylvania's ironclad heritage.
What to Expect on the Colebrookdale Railroad
The Colebrookdale Railroad operates beautifully restored Edwardian-era train cars year-round and features seasonal programming, themed rides, and dining services.
All standard trains depart from Boyertown Station and travel south to Pine Forge. Train excursions are typically two hours long.
You can choose from different types of excursions. If you opt for the dining option, you can enjoy brunch or a multi-course meal experience as you journey into the Secret Valley. You can also be an “engineer for a day” and drive a locomotive. Families can book a trip on one of the railroad's many kid-friendly services, such as Santa's Polar Bear Express in the winter or the spooky Dark Arts Express trains in the fall. The railroad also offers sensory-friendly rides at various times during the year. Colebrookdale Railroad ticket prices vary depending on the excursion and season.
Railbike Expeditions
If you're ready for a more physical challenge, you can book a railbike expedition on the Colebrookdale Railroad. These people-powered rail vehicles accommodate up to four people and operate like a bicycle by pedaling!
Railbike rides last approximately one hour and cover a four-mile stretch of the railroad. You'll surely enjoy venturing deep inside the forests of the Secret Valley if you're a nature lover.
Expect to see plenty of wildlife, natural wonders, old-time bridges, and even Civil War-era relics.
Whether you're looking for a unique travel experience or want to immerse yourself in the past, the Colebrookdale Railroad has tailor-made options for everyone!
