Built to serve the Colebrook Iron Company, the line passes the earliest iron furnace in the region, put into blast in 1716, when it became up to Americans to produce iron for the growing colonies. Later these same furnaces and forges produced metal for the Panama Canal and the Golden Gate Bridge, and practical items such as stoves for rail-road cabooses. You can also ride the steam train at the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, where a narrow gauge railroad takes you straight underground to see the mine, up close and personal.
