Great Stuff Summer Challenge Week Four

Summer solstice has arrived with longer days and warmer nights. It’s a great time to experience all Berks County has to see and do. To kick start your summer fun, we put together PA’s Americana Region Great Stuff Challenge. It’s a checklist filled with weekly activities; everything from adventurous weekends spent outdoors, to staycations with visits to local events and attractions. As you check off the items on your list, we think you’ll agree, Great Stuff Happens Here!

Week 4 Challenge – “Afternoon of Americana”

Using this week’s Great Stuff Summer Challenge, experience an afternoon of PA Americana. Immerse yourself in the history which characterizes Central Pennsylvania. Explore just a few of the great events and activities that strive to preserve and understand the unique history of Berks County. Complement your fun-packed summer with a step back into simpler times!

Gary Erbie: 50 Year Retrospective, July 16th 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. *going until August 5th -Internationally known, Gary Erbe’s iconic images of Americana explore a wide range of familiar subjects, including the golden age of television, sports, popular cartoons, classic Saturday morning matinees, and culturally important social commentary.

Moulding and Casting Demonstrations, July 21st 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. -Join park staff at the Cast House for the demonstration of the moulding and casting process. In order to make cast iron items such as stove plates or pots and skillets, the Ironmaster employed workers called Moulders. Park staff will demonstrated the highly skilled process of moulding and use molten aluminum to cast a reproduction stove plate.

The Carousel at Pottstown, July 21st 12 – 5 p.m. -Come ride the second oldest operating Philadelphia Toboggan Company wooden carousel in the United States. No admission fee, free on-site parking, arcade games, and refreshments.

Step Back in Time, July 22nd 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. -Come experience the Heritage Center’s 200-year history when it was a working farm. See demonstrations and workshops throughout the day of old time crafts and hands-on activities including: Old Fashioned Games, Crafts, Demos & Displays.

53rd Annual Duryea Day, Sept 1 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. -Held in beautiful Boyertown Community Park, Duryea Day is a well-established event that attracts hundreds of cars, trucks and motorcycles from all decades. Music, great food and children’s entertainment make this a family-friendly and affordable event.

Establishment Day 80th anniversary, August 4th 10 a.m. 4 p.m. -Join us as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the creation of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site with family activities around the site.
