Winter Wellness Walk

January 4th: Winter Wellness Walk

Join Berks County Parks staff as they get out on the Union Canal Trail to enjoy an hour-long brisk walk with likeminded friends. Getting moving this time of the year can be tough, but studies show that outdoor time is just as important in winter as the warmer months of the year. Just a few minutes of walking can greatly improve the state of your mind, create healthy habits, and introduce new connections among others looking to do the same. Wear walking shoes or other appropriate footwear and dress accordingly.

Dear Evan Hansen

January 6th: Dear Evan Hansen

Declared “one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history” by the Washington Post, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the first musical to take a groundbreaking look — from the point of view of both the parents and young people — at our complex, interconnected, and social media-filled lives.

Evan Hansen is a high school student who always feels like he’s on the outside looking in. Evan finally gets what so many of us are searching for—the chance to finally fit in. What follows is a poignant, funny, and powerful musical about how even though it can be hard, we can find each other—and ourselves—along the way.

Including some of the most iconic musical theatre songs from the last decade, including “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through A Window,” and “For Forever,” DEAR EVAN HANSEN features an uplifting score by the Tony ®, Grammy®, and Oscar® winning team behind The Greatest Showman and La La Land, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Tony Award-winner Steven Levenson.

Owl Prowl

January 11: Owl Prowl

Enjoy a moonlit stroll on rustic Antietam Lake Park’s trails while learning about owls. Everyone will meet in the Bingaman House to discuss these nighttime birds of prey, their nesting habits, and their impacts on our environment before heading out on the trail. Wear hiking shoes, bring a flashlight, and dress accordingly.

PA Dutch Classes

Starting January 14th: PA Dutch Classes

Berks History Center (BHC) is hosting online classes that explore the language and culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch again! Enrolling in a Pennsylvania Dutch class at the BHC offers a fun opportunity for students to enjoy the fellowship of other Pennsylvania Dutch enthusiasts, but more importantly, it allows an opportunity to celebrate and preserve this rich cultural heritage.

Currently, BHC offers three different course levels (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced). All classes are eight weeks in length. Classes cost $90 for BHC members (Individual Level Members and above) and $175 for non-members.

Snowshoeing

January 26th: Snowshoeing PA Trails

Join BMECC and Berks Parks & Recreation Department in an out and back snowshoe adventure on the Appalachian Trail. Geared towards those with OR without snowshoe experience, BMECC member Adaiah Bauer and Parks Staff members will share tips, tricks, and equipment notes on snowshoeing on Pennsylvania trails during winter. This is a great introduction to this fun winter activity, and snowshoeing can be done by anyone able to hike but is considered a moderate activity on the uneven terrain of the AT. Bring your own snowshoes, or reserve a pair ahead of time (crest of Blue Mountain at the intersection of PA Route 501 and the Appalachian Trail). In the event of lack of adequate snowpack, you'll hike on foot without snowshoes. Length of hike will depend on size and ability of the group.
