The Inn at Centre Park
If you love to absorb local history when you travel, a stay at The Inn at Centre Park may be the ideal weekend location to relax for a night or two.
Nestled in Reading’s beautiful Centre Park Historic District, the bed and breakfast offers amazing architectural details and a rich historical past. Victorian charm, old world craftsmanship along with impeccable service and attention to detail make the Inn the perfect romantic getaway.
The Wilhelm Mansion, with its Gothic Revival style of architecture, is one of the outstanding landmarks in Reading. The first occupant of the house was the Right Reverend Mark Anthony DeWolfe Howe, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese when the diocese was headquartered in Reading (1877-1880). The next owner was Charles Wilhelm, from whom the mansion takes its current name.
Mr. Wilhelm was president of the Wilhelm Paint Company, and one of Reading’s wealthiest and most prominent industrialists. He lived in the home for nearly 50 years before his death in 1936. The 18-room stone mansion is full of hand-carved oak and chestnut woodwork, 12-foot ceilings, plaster cherubs, Greek figurines and beautiful art glass.
We recommend the two-room Wilhelm Suite, which comprises the original private rooms of Charles Wilhelm, and is the most majestic of the Inn’s three accommodations. It features an enormous red marble fireplace (for an extra touch of romance) which dates to 1894, a king-sized French provincial sleigh bed, the original 6-foot claw foot bathtub and shower, and ornate, leaded glass doors.
But we also love The Parkview suite, which offers views of Centre Park, a king-size bed, and the first shower ever installed in Reading! Of course, there are other lovely options here for your weekend getaway.
