Romantic Weekend Getaways in PA

Pennsylvania has built a reputation as a vacation spot since the early 1800s when the first resorts opened. Think beyond the resorts and head to Reading and Berks County, PA for a romantic weekend of biking, hiking, fine dining and exploring the culture of our region. Surprise your sweetheart, reconnect, relax and enjoy, and return to “real life” feeling rejuvenated and refreshed!

Stokesay Castle

When you’re ready for some great food, head over to Stokesay Castle at 141 Stokesay Castle Lane in Reading.  Inspired by a 13th century English castle of the same name, this was once the vacation home of the Hiester family. Joseph Hiester was born in Berks County in 1752, and his family farmed a tract of land extending from the Bern Church to the Tulpehocken Creek in Bern Township. He was elected governor of Pennsylvania in 1820, and was regarded as the richest man in Berks County.

Today, Stokesay Castle is one of Reading’s favorite places to go for contemporary fine dining. The American cuisine emphasizes organic, fresh and locally-sourced ingredients, with fresh seafood, steaks, veal and chicken entrees, and exquisite specialties, such as center cut Filet Mignon and Roast Duck Breast. Dine in the fancy Lord’s Dining Room on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:00pm to 9:00pm (reservations recommended) and enjoy world-class food and service.

Bear Creek Mountain Resort

If you’re here in warm weather and love outdoor activities, you and your partner may enjoy hiking and biking on over 7 miles of wooded trails that encircle the Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Macungie in the Lehigh Valley. Hikers and bikers will enjoy the local wildlife and spectacular mountain views. In winter, there are 80-plus acres of skiable terrain, with something for every level of skier or snowboarder. Enjoy 12 trails (all lit for night skiing) with everything from an expansive beginner area to Sasquatch, the challenging black diamond trail with a 50% slope.

If relaxing in a serene mountain setting was more what you had in mind, spend a day getting therapeutic treatments at The Spa at Bear Creek. Amenities include a steam room, indoor/outdoor hot tubs, indoor/outdoor pools, a fitness center, and a full menu of spa services.

Hex Barn Art Trail

Everyone loves a leisurely, scenic drive, and this self-guided driving tour will take you on a journey through northern Berks County where you’ll discover many examples of the best-known symbol of the Pennsylvania Dutch – hex signs – painted on barns throughout the area. The 28-mile Hex Barn Art Trail begins in Kutztown and ends near Hamburg, guiding you to dozens of these charming and uniquely American folk art symbols. You’ll see examples of the sun, moon and stars, pinwheel designs, and, with any luck at all, maybe even catch a glimpse of the distelfink, a symbol of good luck and happiness!
