An interpretive center of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, Rivers of Revolution relates the story of the three revolutions that have occurred in Pennsylvania’s Americana Region. The first and most obvious, the American Revolution, powered by cannons built for the Colonials by the iron furnaces and foundries in the area. The second, the American Industrial Revolution, which made the United States an economic powerhouse, occurring as hard anthracite coal from north in Schuylkill County was shipped through Berks County on its way to power industry and homes in Philadelphia. The third revolution, the Environmental Revolution, occurred as the region and the polluted waterway were cleaned up after the constant coal shipments carried down river had come to an end.
